The Herefordshire Case - October 2022

The Herefordshire Case - October 2022

Regular price £27.00
Herefordshire is one of the oldest cider producing areas in the world. Apples play such an important part in the local economy that the county logo is an apple and if you drive from Ross to Hereford to Leominster you’re surrounded by beautiful orchards. We’ve picked 6 examples of classic Herefordshire cider from established producers that have perfected the art over generations.

Celtic Marches ‘Thundering Molly’ (5.2%)
Celtic Marches is one of the larger craft cidermakers in the county and have been farming 200 acres of orchards for eight generations. They grow eight varieties of cider apples and produce a number of different blends, each with its own character. Their bold branding stands out from the crowd and is intended to bring a traditional drink up to date.

Colcombe House ‘Willie Gunn’ (5.3%)
The orchards around Colcombe House have been producing apples for local cider makers for almost 100 years. The pick of the crop is kept to make the Colcombe House blends and the Willie Gunn is their flagship cider. Named after a type of fishing fly, it harks back to the former life of the house as a Victorian fishing lodge on the banks of the river Wye.

Newton Court ‘Yarlington Mill’ (6.8%)
Cidermaker Paul Stephens’ tasting notes explain the link between the cider and the geography that produces it perfectly: “One of the legends of the cider world, Yarlington Mill is revered by many cider makers as their favourite apple. It provides a cider with the colour, aroma and texture of the rich red Herefordshire clay earth. Big and bold, it is guaranteed to put hairs on your chest!

Oliver’s ‘Pomona’ (6.5%)
Tom Oliver is often cited as one of the stars of the cider world. We don’t want to show any favouritism but we couldn’t put together a Herefordshire case without including him! Pomona is a blend of Michelin, Dabinett, Yarlington Mill & a touch of Foxwhelp. As with all of his ciders, this is fermented with wild yeasts and without sulphites so is as wild as it gets.

Ross on Wye ‘Birdbarker’ (5.8%)
Mike and Albert Johnson are also heroes of the cider world and have done a huge amount to advance the cause of real cider. They produce an incredible range of single and double varietals, some of which we’ve featured before, but Birdbarker is their most accessible, showing that you can make an excellent ‘everyday’ cider with real character and complexity.

Wilce’s Medium (6%)
Another family concern with a long cider-making tradition, Brian Wilce is the sixth generation to grow apples and make cider on the family farm in Ledbury. All of the apples used are grown within 4 miles of the farm, where their specimen orchard contains no less than 34 varieties of cider apple.
We hope that you enjoy your cider tour around Herefordshire!

Award-Winning Craft Cider
2x UK Cider Retailer Of The Year
10 Years in Retail
100% Fresh Pressed Juice
Vegan & Gluten Free
Made in the UK
Bristol Cider Shop is the original independent cider shop in the UK, founded in 2010, to provide a range of craft ciders to both cider-loving and cider-curious Bristolians. Whilst some of the early history may be a bit hazy, due to a whirlwind of product tastings, having fun and learning about good (and bad) cider, the business moved online in 2011, to spread the word even wider. From the original shop, via the foodie hub of Harbourside, in 2020 we decided to focus online, to make proper cider available across the land. Along the way we were honoured to be awarded UK Independent Cider Retailer of the Year 2015 and 2018.

How quickly will I get my order?

We will ship all orders in 2 working days maximum, often next day.  Deliveries are only made Monday to Friday.

Can I request delivery for a specific day?

Unfortunately we can't guarantee delivery for a specific date, but will try our best to delay it if needed for a future date. Just add a note to checkout.

What happens If I am not in?

Because we are shipping a Licensed product (alcohol), parcels wont normally be left safe. One of 3 things will happen:

1. It will be delivered to a neighbour and signed for - the tracking will show a photo

2. Delivery will be attempted 2 more times to you

3. It will be taken to your local Post Office for you to collect, and a card left through your letterbox.

How much does delivery cost?

Delivery is £5.95 for most of UK for your first case and then £2.95 for additional ones. Rather than hiding the delivery cost in the product price and offering free delivery (there’s no such thing as free delivery!) we’d rather be transparent about the cost of the product and the cost of the delivery.

Are there any places you cannot ship?

We currently only ship within the UK. Delivery to UK islands, Scottish Islands and Scottish Highlands postcodes may cost extra - delivery charges will be displayed at checkout. Unfortunately we cannot now deliver to Northern Ireland or the Channel Islands - apologies. Nor can we ship outside the UK.

I live in Bristol. Can I collect?

Unfortunately our licence doesn’t allow us to have customer collections on site so we can only take orders for delivery, sorry! Watch this space though for Summer 2024.

How can I track my order?

When we ship your order, you should receive an email from us containing a tracking code from our couriers . The quickest way to track your parcel is to follow the tracking link and this will show you the status of your delivery in real time. This will also allow you to change any delivery details if you need to. If you have any further problems, please email us at and we will do our best to help. Sorry we don't have a phone number.

Can I add a Gift Message?

Yes you can, simply add it in at checkout and we will include it on a card. No paperwork is included in the boxes, so no pricing information is given out.
