This month we've focused on two great modern cider producers - Pearsons and Hogans. Both grow and press their apples close to each other in the beautiful Malvern Hills - but that's where the similarity ends, as from then on they both adopt quite different approaches to cider making.
Mike Pearson likes to take things slowly. Starting with local apples, his mantra is "if the apple isn't good enough to eat, don't make cider from it". His attention to detail, and "let nature do her stuff slowly" methodology means he is producing some fabulous traditional style craft ciders.
Pearson’s #5 - 6.8%
Strong, dry, cider made from Yarlington Mill, Harry Master’s, Hereford Redstreak and Somerset Redstreak apples. It gets its distinctive ‘bite’ from the Redstreaks, while the vintage quality of Harry Master’s & Yarlington Mill give it a rounded finish.
Pearson’s #2 - 5.8%
Crisp, clear, medium-dry, cider. Nicely balanced mix of Yarlington Mill, Harry Master’s, Dabinett and Brown’s apples. It’s great with cheese, spicy food or just enjoyed on its own.
Pearson’s #1 - 4.8%
Intensely appley, medium cider. It has a light fruity aroma and great balance between sweetness, acidity and tannins. Made from Katy, Yarlington Mill, Harry Master’s and Dabinett apples.
Compare and contrast to Allen Hogan, who likes to push the boundaries of flavour, through adopting new techniques and great modern branding. Allen's progressive take on bringing Modern Cider to new audiences is widely recognised, and the 3 products we've selected showcase that.
Killer Sharp - 5.8%
A fresh, earthy cider with a fierce and tangy soured apple edge. Fermented with a Brettanomyces yeast, this is a feisty but proper cider with a twist for those willing enough to try something different. Silver, International Cider Awards 2019.
Hip Hop - 4%
Cider with an infusion of English grown Cascade, Chinook and Bramling Cross hops. A proper mash-up, our authentic bittersweet fresh pressed cider with just that perfect subtle hint of aromatic English hops to create something new and altogether unexpected. A complex and pleasing mix of classic apple tannins with citrus, grapefruit and smokey notes. Fermented with a Champagne yeast.
Libertine - 6.2%
An indulgent and satisfying blend of a punchy cider with a rich burgundy colour. The addition of Muscovado sugar with its dark brown unrefined character is a perfect foil to a strong cider. a delicious depth of flavour that’s as warm as it is wild. It’s a radical renegade of a cider. Best in Category, CiderWorld 2020
